What was the first soul record?
The simplest and most direct answer to that question: Hell, I don’t know!
Soul music was a river that absorbed a number of "streams." R&B, doo-wop, gospel, jazz, the blues, and even country and pop music all made contributions to what became known in the ‘60s as soul.
Since it is impossible to point to just one song as the first soul record, I came up with a whole list of tunes that I felt contributed to the music’s birth. The cut-off point is 1960:
